The mountains and great outdoors are home to Kayden McKenna. More at ease scaling the side of a mountain, she’d rather leave dealing with emotions and people to others. When a deadly twist brings a day of fun and climbing to a screeching halt with the discovery of a body, Kayden is certain there is more at play than a tragic accident. Little does she realize that following her gut is about to throw her life in a completely unforeseeable direction.
For years Jake Westin has hidden out in Yancey, fleeing from his past and his life in law enforcement. But the truth is out now, and the shorthanded sheriff enlists Jake to investigate the death. Kayden’s climbing expertise will force him to work shoulder to shoulder with the one person who – until his background surfaced – was his strongest and most vocal opponent.
Jake and Kayden’s investigation stirs up plenty of hostility from the tight-knit climbing community who is eager to guard its own. Jake’s fears and protective instincts are pushed to the limit when threats against Kayden, the woman he has secretly loved for years, roll in. Finding the dead climber’s killer will prove to be only the tip of the iceberg.
An adventure always awaits when joining the McKenna siblings, and Silenced proves no different. Ever since catching a glimpse into Jake’s past in Stranded as well as witnessing the slight awakening of Kayden’s feelings, I’ve eagerly anticipated the next installment in the series. True to style, Dani Pettrey delivers another captivating story destined to thrill romantic suspense fans. My growing appreciation throughout the Alaskan Courage Series for the mysterious honorary member of the McKenna “gang” is justified. It was great to finally jump inside Jake’s head and peek at the events and things that make him tick.
There was one point, practically towards the end, where Kayden did make a comment about a decision regarding her future that I found slightly dramatic considering the source, but other than that, I loved this story just as I have the three that preceded it. Pettrey provides that perfect blend of romance and suspense that keeps me completely absorbed and turning pages until the last word, consequently reading the novel within 24 hours. Riveting plots, spellbinding settings, and fascinating characters makes this series a favorite in my book.
