On graduation day, Alexia Allen fled her hometown and never looked back. Since then, she has created a new life for herself as a smokejumper—a specialized firefighter who parachutes into remote fires. When equipment failure nearly costs Alexia her life, she decides to back away from smokejumping and uses the time off to attend her high school reunion. However, trouble isn’t finished with the firefighter. Within minutes of arriving home, she stumbles upon a murder. In the days that follow, Alexia receives threatening phone calls, faces accusations of arson, and narrowly escapes several traumatic attacks, making it evident that someone is intent on harming her.

Alexia has intrigued Detective Hunter Graham ever since high school, not that she ever spared him a second glance. Now she is back in town — smack in the center of the crime he’s investigating. Hunter is determined to keep her safe. Not only for her sake, but also to protect the heart he’s lost to the beautiful and independent firefighter.

When the Smoke Clears is the suspense-filled opening to the Deadly Reunion Series. Lynette Eason carries her audience on an intense, adrenaline-packed ride as Hunter and Alexia struggle to catch a killer who always seems to stay a step ahead of them. The readers travel with Alexia on an emotional journey as she trudges through her past and deals with her family demons, learning to forgive in the process.

Unlike many series I’ve read, this isn’t a stand-alone novel. Although they apprehend the killer by the end, he/she is only a small piece in a much bigger puzzle. I like that. I am eager to continue the saga and unravel the clues to an evil and powerful man’s master plan. Romantic suspense fans will want to check out this trilogy.
